Shannon saved the Best for Last! Wow! What can I say, this 6th and last book in the Desert Cursed series is beyond Awesome. So much of what we thought we knew was wrong. Enemies are really allies, of a sort anyway. Friends are questionable, and the hero's are stronger than ever.The world Shannon created in this series is so complex and absorbing, I didn't want to finish the book, for it all to end. But I'm glad I did finish it, as I would have never guessed at the ending. There is so much to say, but I don't like spoilers, so just read the story, and find out for yourself. EnjoyBlindsides aplenty This action-filled series about a triumphant flail and it’s underdog companions is hard to sum up. As with the whole series, friends switch to enemies, and vice versa, in constant blindsides. For a series with excess baddies, it unusually leaves the reader clueless about the true enemy till the very end. I can’t say anymore without spoilers.The characters are distinct, continue to grow, and the strong thread of loyalty is a balm. I particularly enjoy how even the horses become characters. Though all the talking animals (albeit as shapeshifters) is a little odd.The plot is well drawn and not too buried by complex exposition. The action is interesting, well paced and avoids too much repetition. The humour and romance is more muted than in the last book, apart from a few great lines — which I can’t quote without having my review rejected!Plot-wise, this final book is five-star worthy. However it doesn’t quite have the warmth, humour or resonance for five stars overall.Four stars for a strong and surprising action fantasy epic. Just short of five stars.Wow. Just wow! I started Emperor's Throne last evening and stayed up into the wee hours to finish it. Ms. Mayer has concluded this series in her own inimitable way; action, love, betrayal, family and twists, with plenty of snark along the way to keep you smiling. Just when I've come to really love another set of her characters -- Zam, Maks, Lila and Balder -- the adventure is over and the wait begins to see what her fertile minds conceives of next. In the meantime, I'm going to re-read this more slowly and savor it this time. A truly excellent read!
